I am Departmental Lecturer in Mathematics and its History within the History of Mathematics research group at the Mathematical Institute of the University of Oxford, Clifford Norton Senior Research Fellow in the History of Mathematics at The Queen's College, and a member of the Oxford Centre for the History of Science, Medicine, and Technology.  I am currently President of the British Society for the History of Mathematics.

My background is in abstract algebra (semigroup theory), but I now focus exclusively on the history of mathematics, where my research covers a range of topics in nineteenth- and twentieth-century mathematics.  I have studied the development of abstract algebra, mathematical communication during the Cold War, Russian and Soviet mathematics, the International Congresses of Mathematicians, and topics related to British mathematics in the nineteenth century, most notably the mathematical manuscripts of Ada Lovelace.  Most recently, I have been working on a historiographical project concerning ancient Egyptian mathematics.
